The Indie Art Scene in Dallas Starts Now

Just one of a variety of hip cities around the globe where an event called Slideluck will be held, the show is returning to Dallas this weekend at the AT&T Performing Arts Center and is an unusual independent art forum meant to expose artists, curators, collectors, editors and the public to new works of art in a variety of genres.

Slideluck’s Dallas III show is under the direction of artist Misty Keasler, according to Brian Gibb who handles Communications for Slideluck, and is supported in part by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

This year’s Dallas III slideshow was juried by Andrea Karnes, curator at The Fort Worth Modern and attendees  can groove to the tunes of CIVIL who put together the slideshow’s soundtrack, which will feature 25 artists.  The artists include not only 12 local artists, but also artists hauling from as far away as Penzance, Cornwall, UK and Lutsk, Ukraine.

A free event with the admission price being food to share, following the slideshow there will be a live musical performance by Sam Lao. Slideluck’s Global Partner, Brooklyn Brewery, will be providing complimentary beer to guests over 21 years old.

An email sent by Gibbs also indicated that the first 200 guests to arrive will receive a gift bag with this year’s Slideluck T-shirt featuring artwork from one of the evening’s featured artist.

Slideluck 2016 will take place Saturday, May 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Strauss Square at the AT&T Performing Arts Center with an emphasis on building and strengthening community through food and art. The show’s press release also indicates that since 2000, “Slideluck has been bringing events that combine a multimedia slideshow with a potluck dinner to over 85 cities and communities all over the world. Slideluck has become a place for artists and arts-appreciators to come together and share their work in a congenial, non-competitive atmosphere. Each event is localized in that artists from a community present work to that community.”

If you happen to miss this weekend’s Slideluck, well, you’re still in luck because come July there is yet a second indie art event coming through town.  This one also takes place around the country call RAW (http://www.rawartists.org/dallas/).
“By artists for artists” is the idea in order to provide independent artists within the first 10 years of their creative career with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity, according to the organizations website.  The event provides the platform for artists in a variety of genres to be seen and heard.  From visual art to film, fashion design, music, performance art, hair and makeup artistry and photography, Raw operates in over 60 cities in the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK.
“We are not your average art show,” the website reads. “We are loud, colorful, creative and all about our artists. We are RAW.”

The Dallas RAW event will be held on July 28 at 7:30 p.m., check the organization’s website for location details as the event date nears.
