ARLINGTON – Medical City Arlington is partnering with mobility experts to host CarFit check-ups for older adults, seniors and their families in parking lot F (behind the Arlington Tennis Center at 500 W. Mayfield Road) on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Each check takes about 20 minutes and will help adult drivers over age 65 find a better “fit” with their cars for maximum safety and comfort. There will also be an hour-long information session on Oct. 31 from 4 – 5 p.m. to answer questions in advance regarding the process.

Among the items checked during the 12-point checklist with each driver are:

  • Correct position of driver’s seat
  • Driver’s ability to easily reach pedals
  • Proper adjustment of mirrors

“Our dedicated trauma team is proud to care for our community with this important safety event,” says Jessica Turner, injury prevention coordinator at Medical City Arlington. “This special event, along with our regular Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) Fall Prevention classes, is just one of the many ways Medical City Arlington lives our mission to care for and improve the lives in the communities that we serve.”

CarFit is a national program developed by AAA, AARP and the American

Occupational Therapy Association and is designed to give the nearly 10,000 Americans who turn 65 every day and all senior drivers a quick, yet comprehensive check on how well their vehicles fit them.

Occupational therapists will personally consult with senior drivers on ways to maintain and improve driving health as well as provide information about local community resources on exercise, nutrition and other programs to help keep them, and ultimately others, safe on the road.

The public is encouraged to sign up in advance by calling 817-239-5041 or register online for the information session and the CarFit event.
