Inaugural STEM Showcase Highlights Bright Minds, Bright Ideas

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Oakridge School will host its first STEM Showcase Wednesday, April 25. More than 130 students in grades 3 through 12 will present individual and team projects focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“We are excited to host the STEM Showcase, which for many, might bring to mind a traditional science fair. However, our approach is unique,” said Mrs. Lori Lane, assistant head of Middle School and chair of the Department of Science. “A different mindset is represented with this event. The student participants submitted proposals and were selected by a committee. Their parents had to sign off on their projects and commit to allowing their children to do the work independently.”

Among the student entries are projects that fall into the categories:

  • Animals, Plants and the Human Body
  • Chemistry and Physics
  • Earth Science and Space
  • Computer Science and Mathematics
  • Engineering and Electronics

Some proposals range from making slime and 3-D printing in geometry to determining if digital streaming is helping or hurting society. “We believe the STEM Showcase is important not only to Oakridge, but to the external community as well,” Mrs. Lane said. “The STEM fields have the ability to change a student’s life. Those students, in turn, can change the world.”

Parents, local leaders and community partners have been invited to the STEM Showcase to view the students’ innovative work and tour the school’s four makerspaces, science labs, fine arts performance hall, and athletic fields where hands-on learning is taking place across curriculum.

Established in 1979, The Oakridge School is a coeducational, college preparatory school for students in preschool through grade 12.
