A student at The Oakridge School wants to promote environmental conservation, everywhere, and his efforts have gained him national attention. Eshan Singhal has been named the Texas District Six winner in the 2021 Congressional App Challenge. Eshan, a junior at Oakridge, created “Cleaner Together,” which streamlines the recycling process. The app allows users to determine the disposability of an item and has a public forum.

Eshan Singhal, Oakridge studentThe Congressional App Challenge included middle and high school students from all 50 states. The competition’s goal is to encourage students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. The Challenge is intended to highlight the value of computer science and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

“The level of innovation I saw from the applicants from House District Six was nothing short of remarkable,” said Congressman Jake Ellzey (R-CD6). “These young men and women are the next generation of leaders, and I am grateful to be a part of their growth and learning. Congratulations to Eshan on all of his hard work and this tremendous accomplishment.”

In all, more than 7,174 students nationwide registered for the 2021 Congressional App Challenge and 2,101 apps were developed. The winning apps from each congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website and are eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol during the #HouseofCode festival that is scheduled to take place in the spring.
