SUMMARY:Feeding your friendly Backyard Herbivore
DESCRIPTION:Join by Zoom https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85784089363 630PM social
time and equipment check 7PM presentation \nDid you know that most insect
s depend on at least one microbe for their nutrition and survival? Dr. Ali
son Ravenscraft will lead ACC on a tour through the little known but vast
and fascinating world of insect-microbe symbioses\, focusing on how micro
bes help insects eat plants. She will discuss examples that involve native
plants and insects you've probably seen in your backyard. You'll never se
e a bug the same way again! Dr. Ravenscraft is a biology assistant profess
or at UTA. She studies symbioses between microbes and insects like leaf-fo
oted bugs\, butterflies\, and grasshoppers. Insects play an important role
as consumers\, pollinators\, and disease vectors. Dr. Ravenscraft's resea
rch seeks to reveal how symbiotic microbes impact these ecosystem-level pr
ocesses. Dr. Ravenscraft did her PhD at Stanford University and a postdoct
oral fellowship at the University of Arizona. She joined UTA in 2019.\nZoo
